What is Outdoor Table?
An outdoor table is a table specifically designed for use in outdoor spaces such as patios, decks, or gardens. It is often used for outdoor dining, entertaining guests, or as a centerpiece for outdoor decor. Outdoor tables come in various shapes, sizes, and styles to match different outdoor designs and personal preferences.
Advantages of Outdoor Table
Outdoor Tables Invite People to Stay a While
When you add a picnic table to an outdoor recreational area like a park, you are creating an inviting place where your guests feel comfortable relaxing. This will help people enjoy your recreational area and want to stay longer, even dining in for a meal at your location instead of leaving. At a business, you are showing consideration that your customers, employees, or guests might need a place to sit for a while or that they might like to enjoy a meal outdoors instead of inside a cafeteria.
Seating Space for All Ages
Many locations can benefit from outdoor seating. Outdoor tables allow visitors to public parks to have a picnic, a space for children to eat outdoors at schools and childcare settings, and a place for the elderly to sit in a patio area. They're also perfect for colleges, homeowner’s associations, and apartment complexes. In some areas, you can even add a grill so people can barbecue. For your business or organization, you can allow your employees to enjoy their break and lunch times outdoors.
Spaces for Activities and Parties
Outdoor tables also make the perfect spot for arts and crafts for schools, summer camps, senior centers, and similar locations. They give everyone a chance to enjoy being engaged in a project, plus messes are easier to handle than in an indoor setting. You can also conduct classes and team-building exercises at a group of tables. Picnic tables are also perfect for parties. You can celebrate special occasions for students or staff members, and patrons can use these spaces for birthday parties, baby showers, and other events.
Create Extra Seating for a Restaurant or Cafe
By adding tables to an outdoor area at a restaurant or cafe, you can create additional seating and allow people to enjoy their meals in the fresh air. This type of table is perfect for a casual eatery where people like to sit and relax for a while. No matter what you use these outdoor tables for, add an umbrella to the center to help guests enjoy the setting without the weather or hot sun ruining their experience.
Durability of Outdoor Tables & Benches
Where outdated wooden patio tables will weather and eventually rot under harsher climates, modern outdoor furniture will last for decades. This is mainly due to material selection and the type of maintenance that is kept up on the product. Manufacturers often prefer metal or plastic to wood for commercial furniture. Customers who manage properties near the ocean will appreciate tables made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene) simply because they will last and not be harmed by salty seawater spray.
Types of Outdoor Table
Square tables
Normally, they are quite small in size. They are designed for two people, although they can also be used by up to four people if they are large enough. As they have the same distance between each diner, they take up quite a lot of space.
Rectangular tables
If your aim is to seat as many people as possible, the rectangular table is ideal for its size and efficiency. However, it creates a hierarchical space with people placed at the ends and this can detract from the intimacy between diners.
Round tables
This type of table is the most suitable for meetings with friends and family. Its design allows you to see all your guests from any angle and facilitates conversation, as everyone is seated at the same distance. On the downside, they are the least suitable for making the most of the space. If you want to place it on a small terrace and you want to receive many guests, this is not the table for you.
Elliptical tables
This type of table is a variant of the round table and the rectangular table. They facilitate the passage and circulation of space, as they do not have corners, the diners are also more comfortable and, if necessary, they can squeeze together and make room for another person.
Extendable tables
Extendable tables are a very interesting option if you usually receive guests. They have a structure that allows them to be enlarged in certain situations. Thus, when necessary, they can go from offering space for 6 diners to fit 10, for example. There are different sizes and variations, so we can offer you a wide range of possibilities, for more or less people according to your needs.
Folding table
For dynamic people who love visual order, a folding table is a suitable option, also for spaces with limited dimensions, as it folds up on itself to take up less space when not in use. This makes it easy to store it in any corner and use the free space for other tasks and occasions.
Outdoor Table Tops – What Are Your Options?
Wood
The common types of wood outdoor table tops that we supply are Teak, Iroko and Robinia. Teak is a popular choice as it guarantees high performances in terms of durability, resistance to water and temperature fluctuations. It is very dense and contains natural oils that repel water making it a low maintenance material. Our teak tops are available with natural or base oil treatments with a flat edge. Iroko wood is made from African timber and is widely used for its durability and high resistance to decay. It is a cost-effective solution to teak tops with a similar appearance in colour and the pattern of grain which darkens significantly over time and when oiled.
Laminate
Solid compact laminate tops are obtained by pressing a series of sheets impregnated with thermohardening resins. They are exceptionally tough and resistant to scratches, abrasions, chemicals, and heat, making them ideal for a wide range of outdoor contract applications. Solid compact laminate tops are supplied with either a black or white core, available in different shapes, sizes, and edge profiles. They can be used as a cost-effective alternative to metal tops as there are a range of laminates available designed to look like marble, granite, concrete etc, offering a premium look at an affordable price.
Metal
Metal table tops are a practical and versatile solution for outdoor use as they are very durable and low maintenance. Galvanized steel tops have a waterproof MDF core and polyester powder coated finish available in a range of different colours. The special outdoor coating makes the tops suitable for intensive use as well as weather resistant. Stainless steel tops are made up of weatherproof marine grade stainless steel with a MDF core. They will not rust or weather if the correct maintenance and cleaning is carried out and therefore can be left outside all year round.
Stone
Stone shows a high performance across durability, aesthetics, abrasion, heat, stain and scratch resistance so can be used for outdoor table tops. Granite and marble are two popular choices for outdoor table tops. Granites are over 2900 million years old and made up of volcanic magma, making them the most bombproof choice of natural stone. Granite is inert enough to resist general weathering, therefor suitable for outdoor usage. Marble is metamorphic recrystallized limestone that can be supplied in an incredible array of colours and patterns, with no two slabs of marble the same making it extremely unique.

Invest in Surface Mounting Options
While most parks, schools, or community centers like the convenience of portable picnic tables, benches, and outdoor trash receptacles, investing in a surface mounting kit is a great way to ensure your outdoor site furnishings aren’t going anywhere in higher winds. So what is a surface mounting kit? It typically contains the parts and pieces – like clamps, for example – needed to convert your moveable outdoor site amenities into ones that are bolted to concrete. Surface mounting kits usually take the form of a clamp that wraps around a bench or table’s frame.
Purchase Rain-Resistant Trash Receptacles
No one likes to clean out a trash receptacle after a rainstorm. Not only do you have trash in your bag, but you also have a lot of heavy water. If this isn’t your thing, choose an outside trash receptacle that has a dome top with a self-closing door or, for a more modern look, choose a flat top with rain bonnet. Both lid styles will help keep that unwanted rain out of your trash receptacle. What’s more, most lids come with a cable connection that secures your lid to the trash receptacle.
Secure and Close Your Patio Umbrella
If you have areas like concession seating or outside dining where patio umbrellas are an added amenity to your outdoor tables, secure your umbrellas with an umbrella anchor. While many companies offer weighted umbrella stands – a valuable, adequate solution – some offer umbrella anchors, too. What’s the difference? Umbrella anchors secure the umbrella to a commercial-grade outdoor table whereas an umbrella stand just holds the umbrella upright. When the wind becomes a factor, many umbrellas held upright by an umbrella stand go flying. Use the weight of your all-steel picnic table to your advantage by opting for the umbrella anchor. In addition to securing the umbrella to the table, add closing the umbrellas into your nightly closing routine.
Clear off any items that are in the way
As you clean your table, ensure nothing will get damaged or marred by the cleaning process. This can be done by temporarily removing any items from the table to a safe spot.
Make sure the table is free of dust and debris
If there’s dirt or dust on your table, use a soft microfiber cloth and water to gently wipe the surface of your table until no remnants remain visible on its surface. This will allow the table to be cleaned efficiently and evenly.
Use a cleaning solution
There are a lot of specialised cleaning products for different timbers, but a safe homemade alternative can be made. You’ll want to create a mixture of liquid soap and warm water to wipe down the table. (Please note that it is best to avoid harsh chemicals and synthetics).
Cleaning the wood
Gently wipe your outdoor table using a microfiber cloth with your desired cleaning solution. Make sure you get into all the grooves and crevices where dirt can collect.
Getting Rid Of Mildew Or Mould
A cleaning solution commercially made for the specific type of timber your table consists of would be advised. White Vinegar mixed with warm water is a popular non-toxic and eco-friendly alternative used to deal with any mildew or mould that's growing on timber tables.
Use A High-Pressure Washer
As an alternative to the above steps, a power washer is very effective for removing any excess dirt from your table. It’s also possible but not necessary to sand the table back after using this method to achieve the best outcome. This is not advised if your table has been stained or painted, and you’re looking to maintain its current colour as it will bring back the wood to its natural appearance.
Apply “Hardwood & Teak Protector and Shield” once the table has dried
Once you’ve cleaned your table, you may want to apply a water-based product to maintain the aesthetics of the table. The shield is great to put on to seal the teak from spills and stains.
How to Paint an Outdoor Table
Sand
- After preparing your space use the electric sander with 150 grit paper to lightly sand your surfaces. Be sure to wear a safety mask.
- Rough up all areas of your piece.
- Take your cloth rag to wipe away excess. If you have a slatted piece with nooks and crannies you can use a leaf blower to get your surface clean of dust particles.
Prime
- When using paint & primer it’s always a good idea to wear latex gloves.
- Using your 2" angled brush apply 1 coat of an exterior latex primer. Be sure to go with the grain of your wood.
- Leave your piece time to cure before applying your top coat, this will insure the longevity of the painted piece.
Paint
- Take your exterior color of choice and apply your first coat with your 2" angled brush.
- Going with the grain of the wood apply conservatively to your open slates to avoid drips. You can use an artist brush to smooth out and variations in the paint application especially in your tight areas.
- For the second coat I used a small foam roller for an even finish but you may also use the same paint brush as well.
- Let the piece dry in between coats and give it a day or two to cure completely before using it outside, especially if you live in a humid area.
How to Turn Your Indoor Table into an Outdoor Table?
CLEANING
Your surface should be as dust- and dirt-free as possible. We recommend a diluted solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate) or dish detergent to help it along.
REPAIRING
This step is only applicable if your piece has any damage that needs attention. In many cases, minor wear and damage can add character to an older piece, so it’s not always necessary to address. Glue down corners where the board is coming loose and patch holes with wood putty. If your piece is in good shape to start, you can skip this step.
SANDING
After you have a clean, repaired surface to work with, a light sanding will help create a better bond for the finish you’re about to apply. Clean off any residual sawdust before proceeding to the next step.
SELECT
Choose a paint that’s made for exterior use and suitable for furniture.
COAT
Your goal here is to coat every surface that would be exposed to the elements. You don’t just want to cover it, you want to encapsulate as much as possible. The more protection you can provide the wood, the longer your piece will last outdoors.
CURE
You probably know it takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days to dry, depending upon the type of finish and relative humidity. But you may not know that your paint needs far more time to fully cure. So while it may feel dry to the touch after a short period, you’ll want to give it the time it needs to completely settle onto your furniture. If at all possible, store your drying piece in the garage or shed for a few days to a few weeks for the best results.
ENHANCE
After your piece has cured, it’s a good time to add any other decoration or enhancement you would like, including further paint treatments and decorative trim.
Maintenance and Care of Outdoor Wood Table
Cleaning
Regularly clean the table with a mild soap solution and a soft brush to remove dirt, grime, and any mildew that may have accumulated. Rinse thoroughly and allow the table to dry completely before applying any protective treatments.
Protective Treatments
Consider applying a high-quality sealant or outdoor table oil to protect the wood from moisture, UV rays, and general wear. These treatments can help maintain the wood’s natural color and prevent weather-related damage.
Storage
During inclement weather or prolonged periods of disuse, consider storing your outdoor wood table in a covered area or using protective table covers to shield it from the elements.
Regular Inspections
Periodically inspect the table for any signs of wear, such as loose joints, cracks, or splintering. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and maintain the table’s structural integrity.
Refinishing
Over time, outdoor wood table may benefit from refinishing to restore its original luster and protection. Sanding and reapplying a sealant or outdoor table oil can revitalize the wood and extend its lifespan.
